Donation for 5/12 Sichuan Earthquake Relief

Dear USAWKF Members,

On May 12, a powerful earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale struck Sichuan province in southwestern China, it was the largest earthquake in China in three decades, many places in China and Asia felt the tremors. Those 30 seconds were nothing compared to the devastation that has occurred in Sichuan and surrounding regions. Many villages have been razed; schools, homes and offices have crumbled; and the death toll stands, at this writing over 30000 and is expected to rise to 50,000.

The localities most severely affected by the earthquake are in the area around Wenchuan, Sichuan Province. Shannxi, Gansu, Yunnan and Chongqing are also affected. Wenchuan and Beichuan still have limited accessibility by road and telecommunications, so the full extent of damages there has yet to be assessed. Many local schools were badly affected and hundreds of students were trapped under the rubble. Due to torrential rain, planes and helicopters are also unable to land in the area.

Several officials and members of USAWKF have called on a relief fund to convey our heartfelt thoughts: to send hope to the victims that they are not alone. We, with many others try to do our best to bring help and relief to them and their families.

Some USAWKF officials and members have begun their efforts by organizing fund raising among their friends and families, organizing workshops, seminars and other events to raise fund for the relief. USAWKF will designate a place on the website to post the list of the donors and their contributions.

All current donations for the Sichuan earthquake relief will be place under USAWKF account and channeled to the Embassy of China in Washington DC, to ensure the direct distribution of the aid for relief efforts.

Donations can be done in cash or checks. Please make checks payable to USAWKF, and mark "512 Sichuan Earthquake Relief Fund" and mail to the address below:
